Elementum is a type of mineral created by alchemists and magicians to "feed" and sustain the operation of an elemental. One elementum only lasts for several days. An inactive elemental can be fed elementum to make it operate again. It becomes obvious when an elemental is about to exhaust its supply of elementum, as its movements become more sluggish and its logic deteriorates.
